The Rip Navigator Scout is Mereen-Johnson’s largest rip optimization system — a complete, automated lumber ripping system that scans every board and rips it for maximum yield. As a full lumber optimization system with infeed chains, board dealers, and an optional board flipper, this automated rip system feeds, scans, solves, and rips up to ten 16-foot boards per minute, then reports on every load. It’s the rip optimizing machine for shops that want big-shop optimization in a compact, affordably priced package.

How the Rip Navigator Scout Works

The Scout automates the whole ripping decision — feeding, scanning, optimizing, and ripping each board, then tracking the result:

Feed. Infeed chains, accumulator arms, and an integrated board dealer meter boards into the system one at a time, so a single operator can keep it running. Power Tables with dual, pressure-compensated rolls feed each board accurately with minimal saw-bed wear.
Scan. As each board enters, the Scout scans it for width, length, and crook. (An optional NaviVision upgrade adds multiple color cameras for surface-defect detection.)
Optimize. Rip Navigator calculates the best rip solution for that board against your active cut bill, in one of three modes — Yield to maximize fiber recovery, Value to prioritize your highest-dollar parts, or Manual when inventory matters more than yield.
Rip (and edit if needed). The solution drives the system guide (in linear ways) and the paired rip saw; an operator intervention station with servo-controlled lasers lets the operator see and edit the computer-generated solution before the cut.
Track. Real-time recording reports by operator, vendor, species, shift, thickness, grade, or load — and can turn off rips automatically once production targets are met.
